The importance of alcohol & drug policies

Experts in the field (see Research) argue for a shift away from the traditional approaches to managing alcohol and drug use in the workplace to one of a broader primary prevention approach.

There are four basic components of such an approach that are vital to a good workplace response:

  1. The development and implementation of a formal workplace policy
  2. The provision of education and training
  3. Access to counseling and treatment
  4. Evaluation

The CFMEU’s Workplace Impairment Policies relate the core union messages of health, safety and well-being for workers. The policies exist in a bipartisan spirit between unions and employers.
